The Autism Society San Diego Summer Surf Camp for those with Autism.

Summer camp (6 weeks/Monday thru Thursday 9 am – 2 pm/Participation in all weeks of camp is preferred, but not required)

This year marks our 22nd year for the Autism Society San Diego Surf Camp!  We are seeking candidates with either surfing experience or previous camp experience for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Surf Instructor Job Description

POSITION TYPE

Part Time, Seasonal July 5th-August 10, 2023

DESCRIPTION

To provide surfing instruction and facilitate beach activities for the attending surf camp participants. You will be one on one with a camper who has autism. Camp Director will oversee and manage the instructors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Knowledge of and the ability to demonstrate skills in surfing. Provide instruction for varying ages of individuals with autism. Ability to stay calm and use patience.
• Come prepared and on time each day. Remain to answer parent questions and clean up supplies.
• Actively teach your camper in the water, give clear directions and provide adequate demonstrations.
• Educate participants on proper technique and promote safety. Seek every opportunity to encourage, motivate.
• Maintain a clean area and secure campers belongings.
• Provide for the health and safety of participants, including ensuring that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment are safe.
• Ability to tend to emergency situations in accordance with accident/incident protocols and/or emergency action plans.
• Attend mandatory meetings as scheduled.
• Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service.
• Monitor changing weather and ocean conditions and make appropriate decisions to ensure safety of students.
• Complete additional duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• 18 years of age or older
• Ability to work independently and possess energy and enthusiasm.
• Ability to positively interact with the public and autism individuals.
• Current CPR/AED Lifeguarding certification preferred.
• Ocean competence and experience required. Ability to perform an ocean swim test. Must be comfortable swimming in breaking surf. The work environment will involve exposure to salt water, cold water, sun, wind, rain, weather, sand, seaweed, sea grass, ocean currents, sea creatures, and other outdoor elements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to lift equipment, and to lift an average size child to adult.
• Ability to be in the ocean with temperatures ranging from 63*-75*
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.

Schedule and Compensation

• Pay range: $22 per hour
