We are a very small business that takes maximum 6 and sometimes 8 guests at any one time. When we just started this business in Feb 2018, Steffi and I did absolutely everything ourselves. Now we are super stoked to get some help so that we can enjoy a bit more time for ourselves.
A day at the surf camp
Normally we have an 8am breakfast and leave to go surfing at 9am or just before. We get to the spot and do a 1.5hour surf lesson. Then some chill time to eat our packed lunch between surfs. Then it’s time for the 2nd session, another 1.5hours, then back to the surf camp. It is normally about 3pm at this point. The guests then have yoga at about 4:30pm and then it’s dinner at 6pm. People are normally so tired after this that they go to bet quite soon!! Otherwise they play some billiards and chat and have a few beers. And that’s a normal day here!
Why we will be stoked to have you help out 🙂
Keep in mind that the below ”days per week” is kind of an approx guideline. We generally run a surfcamp for 10 to 14 days in a row then have about 4 to 6 days of rest in between. So although we go all those days in a row you will not be on every single day, and then on top of that you will have all those rest days to yourself. You will have a lot of free time and on the off days you will have the entire surf camp to yourself, and the doggies 🙂 You will have time to surf your freakin brains out here:)
So where Steffi and I spend a lot of time is where we would like you to come in and free us up. That is at breakfast times 5 to 6 mornings per week and dinner times, 4 evenings per week.
The evenings – We need you to do 4 evening shifts per week. It’s not a crazy shift, its literally about 5pm to 8:30pm. Sometimes even earlier as people fall asleep quick here 🙂 This just involves getting the music going, then making sure the music is not too loud while yoga is on. Then making sure the lights are all on and candles lit. Then finishing and dishing up the dinner that has already been cooked. You will only be making some salads and dishing up. Then cleaning the kitchen after dinner. It’s a small kitchen so it’s really no stress 🙂
The mornings – making breakfast and the lunch packs 6 mornings per week. If you are fast it starts at 6:45am and you are done by 8:45am. The rest of your day is free for surfing!! It’s easy peasy.
If you are a surf instructor (Not a requirement!) or interested in helping out with the surf instructing then you and one of our local coaches would do about 3 days of surf coaching per week. For this we would pay you R300 for each day in the water. That is almost nothing but at least it’s a few beers.
What’s in it for you?
If you join us you would get your own nice tent on a deck outside. It has a mattress on a raised bed base. There is also a shelf for your clothes in there, electric plug points, a fan and fast unlimited wifi. It’s a pretty cool set up and you at least have your privacy, you don’t have to share a dorm with others.
You eat all your meals free with us and we eat awesome food for breakfast, lunch and dinner 🙂
You can join in on as much surfing as you want and also yoga (if there is space in the studio and you are not on dinner duty that evening).
Freedom in South Africa means having transport. So we actually have an old surf camp scooter with a surfboard rack to ride to wherever you want to surf or see. It will be yours to use as you want while you stay here 🙂
Cape Town has a rich culture and the surf scene is very cool and uncrowded. Only 2 breaks are very crowded here. There is also so much to see around where we are. We have the penguin colony right here, the Cape Point is on our doorstep, all the surf spots are very close, Chapmans Peak Drive, Hout Bay, Lions Head, Table Mountain, Kommetjie, Kalk Bay, Muizenberg. There is a lot to do!
As we are such a small surf camp you also get to know the guests very well and make friends. You will be the only volunteer so it will definitely help if you have an outgoing personality and like meeting other people. This is not a position for extreme introverts. It’s small and chill and we do it properly. We have a high standard of service, we expect you to have that too in your short working hours. We want everyone to have fun, including you 🙂
Also while you are here we can be quite flexible and if you want to go for a couple of days up the Garden Route or do a small surf mission to J Bay for a few days we can always work something out. Also if you want to go out at night and change few shifts around just let us know and we work it out.
Your expectations 🙂
If you are coming to South Africa to have an awesome time, surf your brains out in uncrowded waves, explore a beautiful country, meet new friends around Cape Town and have something to do with a cool place to stay and eat, then you are coming to the perfect place:) You will have no expenses when you stay with us. We need someone that is not shy to talk to people, someone that is outgoing and fun. Female or male makes no difference to us, everyone is welcome to apply 🙂
If you are coming to Cape Town as a surf coach to make money to continue your travels then YOU ARE COMING TO THE WRONG COUNTRY. It is still very 3rd world here and surf coaches make less than minimum wage. All the good ones go to Europe to make money.
